Chase Covello is a senior associate and member of the firm’s technology/ intellectual property law group. Chase focuses his practice on litigation and transactional issues involving intellectual property such as patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets.
Chase received his J.D. from the Boston University School of Law. He holds a Masters in Computer Science, as well as a B.S. cum laude in Computer Science, from the University of California, Los Angeles. Chase’s areas of expertise include digital security and privacy, cryptography, parallel computing, distributed and embedded systems, programming language systems, static program analysis, compiler systems and linguistics.
Prior to joining MWM LA, Chase interned for Warner Bros. Entertainment where he reviewed data privacy requirements, software licensing agreements, and contractor agreements for WB’s information systems department. Chase also worked for Citicorp, where he built an automated test suite for Citicorp’s financial database system.
Chase is a regular lecturer for the Department of Sociology at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he teaches Data Science for the Social Sciences with Dr. Amarita Natt. Class topics include data collection, database management, aggregate data manipulation with SQL, procedural data manipulation with Python, and data visualization.
Chase is admitted to practice before the California State Bar, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and the United States District Court for the Central District of California.
- Obtained patents for computer, electrical, and mechanical inventions, including an intelligent, autonomous audio/visual source controller, a suspended ceiling-mountable electronic enclosure, a high-speed train transportation system, and a design for typographic font;
- Represented an audio/video technology company as a plaintiff and as a defendant in multiple patent infringement cases involving audio/video switching equipment and components;
- Represented a major cosmetics manufacturer in a trademark infringement case;
- Represented a well-known movie star in an action for unlawful use of name and likeness.
