Paul M. Gelb is a partner in the complex litigation/dispute resolution group. Paul is a consummate business attorney, skilled at advising major sports franchises, fashion brands, entertainment production companies, and Fortune 500 companies. He understands his clients’ business, people, and priorities, providing counsel in all aspects of their business goals and defending them against claims asserted by regulators, adversaries, and other counterparties. Paul is particularly well-versed in multiyear land-use negotiations and disputes over environmental matters and energy development. His goal with every client is to aggressively advance their interests without breaking the bank.
Practicing in the LA market since 2001, Paul has grown his law practice by focusing on clients with brands, international operations, and significant real estate assets. In energy, he spearheaded the defense of several litigation matters for a national energy company related to solar and wind energy development projects, defeating claims challenging the approval of large-scale solar energy projects. Paul has an established body of work defending renewable power developers, property owners, labor unions, and others against claims under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) as well as federal environmental laws. His wins run the gamut – from defeating claims challenging the approval of wind farm projects to obtaining an appellate reversal on nine separate issues blocking a retail construction project.
In real estate, he negotiated and settled a complex lease dispute for a corporate headquarters project, and he supervised the sale of a significant warehouse and industrial building in LA proper. In fashion, he negotiates trademark license and influencer agreements for prominent brands, and in healthcare, he managed international trademark issues for a global medical device company. In entertainment, he regularly counsels a television production company and has litigated high-stakes disputes in the Weinstein bankruptcy proceedings.
Paul is a member of the State Bar of California and the Los Angeles County Bar Association. He received his J.D. from Columbia Law School where he was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and worked on the Journal of Law and Social Problems. He holds a B.A. in history from Columbia University in New York. Prior to joining MWM, Paul practiced at Faegre Drinker.
