Munck Wilson Mandala Welcomes Wade Cloud; Boosts Video Game and Esports Practice

Law Firm Munck Wilson Mandala has added D. Wade Cloud Jr., a new partner with more than 30 years of legal experience handling trademark, licensing and copyright matters across many industries, including automotive parts, food, software development and distribution.  Cloud has developed a unique practice focused on clients in the video game industry, handling licensing and trademark work on iconic video games such as DOOM, Quake, Rage, and Wolfenstein.

Cloud adds to MWM’s legal firepower in video game and esports, growing industries that generated over $30 billion in revenue in the U.S. in 2018.  With the introduction of tournaments like QuakeCon, marketing campaigns, investors, and competitive teams, the success of esports in North Texas is second only to Los Angeles—where MWM established an office earlier this year.

The firm, well-known as an IP powerhouse, has a substantial group of attorneys who represent significant players in video gaming and esports.  With the addition of the Los Angeles office, MWM added entertainment law to the list of legal services, which is a plus according to Cloud who says motion picture rights have become valuable assets as video games are adapted to motion pictures.

“Wade is a perfect addition to our legal team,” said name partner Larry Mandala, chair of the firm’s corporate practice who has represented independent game studios and developers since 2007.  “We are uniquely positioned in North Texas, Austin, and LA to provide guidance that video game and esports clients need in intellectual property, corporate, M&A, securities, financing, real estate, employment, and litigation matters.”

Cloud has been working with video game companies since 1992 and understands and appreciates the unique aspects of the growing industry.  He has watched small developers evolve into well-respected leaders, and he has guided mid-sized and small clients in this fast paced, ever changing market.  He advises clients on a wide range of issues including trademark registration and protection, licensing of intellectual property, and acquisition and sales.  Cloud received his J.D. from Baylor University School of Law where he was selected for Baylor Law Review as a notes and comments editor.  He is a member of the State Bar of Texas and the Dallas Bar Association and he was previously a shareholder at Hiersche, Hayward, Drakeley & Urback, P.C. in Addison, Texas.

“There is great opportunity in esports,” said managing partner William Munck.  “Every day, we see more and more examples where this industry is going to need attorneys with targeted experience and legal expertise.  MWM brings technical knowledge in areas like artificial intelligence, data protection, and virtual reality, and we know how to navigate the courtrooms.  Our team is poised to be a leader in esports and video game law.”

MWM clients agree.  “Munck Wilson Mandala represented us when we were just starting our business and they were our trusted advisors through the launch and sale of our first company,” said Paul Bettner, founder and CEO of Playful Corp, an independent game studio headquartered in McKinney, Texas.  “Their commitment to our business and the success of our company has been consistent since day one and they continue to be a valued partner to Playful today.”

Mandala added, “With the massive growth of esports, companies like Sony, Apple and Nintendo, and people like Mark Cuban and Jerry Jones are investing in this industry that combines sports, technology, and video games,” he said. “As we continue to expand this practice, we will recruit smart attorneys who can represent more developers, investors, and other players who operate in this emerging industry.”
