Munck Wilson Mandala has added Steven Spears to the firm’s award-winning intellectual property practice. Spears brings more than 30 years of litigation experience and will work in the firm’s Houston office. He previously worked in-house at Baker Hughes where he was global IP litigation counsel and Oilfield Chemicals product line IP counsel.

Spears has an extensive background in patent litigation and other intellectual property matters and has worked as a partner in various Houston law firms, including McDermott, Will and Emery, and Arnold White and Durkee.

“Steve is a perfect addition to our team,” said John Cain, managing partner of MWM’s Houston office and a leading trademark partner.  “His trial experience and successes in and out of court strengthen our intellectual property litigation bench and his biotech and chemical background blends well with our technology transactions team.”

Considered a formidable litigator with multiple high-stakes cases under his belt in U.S. Courts, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, and the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals, Spears’ work includes a $1 billion jury verdict judgement for an agricultural biotech company and successful results as lead counsel for a telecommunications company in IPRs and Federal Circuit appeals. He is equally impressive in international cases having been consulted on litigation matters in Norway, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, and before the EPO.

Spears received his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Texas School of Law and his Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, in chemistry from Rice University. He is a registered patent attorney and member of the State Bar of Texas. Spears is listed among the IAM Patent 1000 – World’s Leading Patent Practitioners, the Best Lawyers in America, and IP Stars, and was President of the Nancy F. Atlas IP Inn of Court in 2019-2020.
