Billboard recently quoted Munck Wilson Mandala Los Angeles partner Marina Bogorad in an article analyzing Drake’s appeal in his defamation lawsuit against Universal Music Group over Kendrick Lamar’s diss track “Not Like Us.”
The article, titled “Can Drake Win His Appeal Over Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Not Like Us’? Experts Explain How He Might,” examines the rapper’s legal strategy as he seeks to revive the case after a judge dismissed it last month. Marina, quoted by Billboard as a “veteran entertainment litigator,” told Billboard the ruling raises significant questions about the limits of artistic expression and defamation law.
“The statement on its face accuses Drake of a serious crime,” Bogorad said. “To find that you can lace rap songs with facially libelous statements with impunity as a matter of law is quite a holding.”
