Munck Wilson Mandala is pleased to announce that accomplished intellectual property attorney John Lord has joined the firm as a partner in its Los Angeles office. A registered patent attorney with more than two decades of experience, Mr. Lord strengthens the firm’s nationally recognized intellectual property team and expands its capabilities in high-stakes patent litigation and complex technology disputes.
Mr. Lord focuses his practice on intellectual property matters, including patent, trademark, and copyright litigation, trade secret misappropriation, and false advertising claims. He also advises clients on intellectual property transactions, including patent due diligence for litigation funding companies and strategic counseling on a wide range of IP issues.
Throughout his career, Mr. Lord has represented startups, multinational corporations, research institutions, and individual innovators in complex intellectual property disputes across the country. He has successfully represented both patent owners and accused infringers in matters involving wireless communications, software, medical and consumer technologies, encryption, semiconductors, virtual reality, and other emerging technologies.
Among his notable accomplishments, Mr. Lord represented a leading research institution in a five-year patent infringement case that resulted in royalty payments totaling hundreds of millions of dollars. He has also secured favorable outcomes and settlements for clients defending against patent infringement claims and has successfully argued before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Mr. Lord joins a powerhouse intellectual property practice that includes more than 35 registered patent attorneys and professionals with more than 50 STEM degrees spanning engineering, computer science, mathematics, biology, chemistry, genetics, physics, and other technical disciplines. The firm’s depth of scientific and technical knowledge allows it to represent innovators across a broad spectrum of industries, from software and artificial intelligence to life sciences, telecommunications, medical devices, and advanced manufacturing.
Prior to joining Munck Wilson Mandala, Mr. Lord practiced intellectual property litigation with several prominent firms, including Skiermont Derby, Townsend and Townsend and Crew (now Kilpatrick Townsend), and One LLP. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics with a concentration in Physics from the University of Southern California and his J.D. from Loyola Law School, Los Angeles, where he was a member of the Dean’s Honor List, received the American Jurisprudence Award, and served as Senior Articles Editor of the International and Comparative Law Review.
Mr. Lord is admitted to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the State Bar of California, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and several federal district courts. He has been recognized multiple times as an Intellectual Property Super Lawyer by Thomson Reuters.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Lord serves on the Board of Directors for Once Upon a Room, a nonprofit organization dedicated to transforming hospital rooms for children facing serious illnesses.
